1.1. Explain the diseases and treatment of the common diseases in dogs, cats and horses
Horses: Tetanus, Strangles, EHV1, Hendra (zoonosis), Salmonellosis (zoonosis).
Prevention = vaccination.
Dogs: vaccinations available for Canine distemper virus (low risk), infectious canine
hepatitis (should be vaccinated for), canine parvovirus (low risk, very deadly),
bordetellosis (kennel cough) (secondary to stressors, not fully effective, vaccinate
dependant on stressors e.g. pedigree show or kennel).
Cats: Vaccinations for Feline parvovirus (high mortality), feline calci/herpes virus, feline
immunodeficiency virus. Cats susceptible to chronic kidney disease from repeated
infection.
Also, obesity, periodontal disease and genetic diseases
1.2. Explain the common parasites found in dog, cats and horses and their treatment.
Horses: Strongyles cause colic: Eaten in pasture, plant eggs in intestine, eggs pooped out and
hatch/mature in soil, then mature worms get eaten again. Bite and attach to lining of gut.
Main ones are: Roundworms, Tapeworms, Pinworms, Bot Fly. Also Lice (not strongyles)
o Worm Prevention
Treat every 6-8 weeks or strategic times. Rotate chemical every year to
avoid resistance. Faecal egg count regularly
Paddock control: Faecal removal, Spelling, Harrowing, Cross-grazing,
rotation
Dogs: Roundworm (immunity in older dogs), hookworm, Whipworm, heart worm and
tapeworm cause anaemia. Roundworm Treatment: every 2 weeks from 2-8 weeks of age,
monthly until 6 months. Hookworm - repeat de-worming medication four weeks later.
Whipworm wash area. Heartworm Treatment: adulticides/ filaricides. Also fleas
Cats: Toxoplasmosis intermediate host is rats, zoonosis on pregnant women. Ringworm,
treated using topical, chemical, systematic and physical decontamination.
2.2. How does genetics influence dog health? Explain how Labrador coat colour is controlled using a
punnet square. What genetic phenomenon is this an example of? How do you get all yellow labs?
How do you get a mixed litter of all three?
