Document Summary

Edward jenner administered the first vaccine for smallpox in 1796, since then 5 million children were from the horrific disease and small pox was officially eradicated in 1980. My name is ezri and today i will be addressing the argument for compulsory childhood vaccination in. From a biological perspective, vaccinations provide an individual with immunity to specific diseases, so that if exposed to said diseases their immune response prevents or reduces the severity of infection. Specifically, vaccines safely provoke the immune system to produce antibodies and (cid:858)(cid:373)e(cid:373)ory cells(cid:859) so that in future, the antigen is recognised and the immune response cells can quickly eliminate the pathogen. Our lectures have shown how vaccination can increase the initial fraction of recovereds, prevent epidemics of disease and ensure herd immunity. We know that many diseases can be represented by the sir model. Vaccines increase the initial number of recovereds (r0) that are removed or immune, thus r0 is positive.
