 Informalgroups:emergedspontaneouslyandreflectedacommoninterestofnotwanting

tocareandcomingoffas‘cool’.Thisdidnotalignwiththeformalgroup.Thisinformal

groupsatisfiedsuchneedsofsocialaffiliationandcommonpurpose.



1. Forming:creatingtheteamcontractgroundrulesestablishedwereunclearandwere

madeforthesakeofmakingthem.Notallteammemberswereconsultedwhenmaking

therulesduetolackofinitialinvolvement.

2. Storming:somemembersshowedvisibleandinvisibleresistancetowardsthegroup

onememberdisagreedwiththedecidedprocessofcompletingthegroupprojectand

wasquicklyshutdownbyaninformalgroupof3peoplethatagreedtodoitinawaythat

wasmostsimpleandrequiredthesmallestamountofwork

3. Norming:informalgroupworkedtogether,whilememberthatshowedresistancewas

shutofffromrestofgroupandcompletedworkwithlittlecollaboration.Thisresultedina

lowerlevelofworkbeingcompleted.Therestofthegroupcompletedworktoagood

levelduetogoodrelationshipsbeingdeveloped

4. Performing:workiscompletedwiththeexceptionofonegroupmemberthatignores

deadlinesandstandardofworkwewantedtocompletetheprojectat

5. Adjourning:meetingourgoalofcompletingtheproject,thereforethegroupdisbands



Gersick’spunctuatedequilibriummodel:

 Anunsuccessfulmidpointtransitionresultedinlittlegroupdevelopmentandno

improvementtogroupperformanceovertime.



Groupthink:

 Exhibitedintheinformalgroupofthreegroupmembers

 Theydiscountedoppositiononhowtocompleteprojectsfromanothergroupmember,

anddidnotthinkifhiswayofdoingthingshadanyvaluetoit.Hisideawasshutdown.

 Theyhadanunquestionedbeliefthatthewaytheywerecompletingtheprojectwasthe

bestwaytodoit

 Pressuretoconformwasplacedonmeandtheothergroupmembernotinthisinformal

group.Iwantedtobemoreseriousandcaremoreaboutcompletingtheproject,andthe

othergroupmemberdidn’tagreewithhowwewerecompetingit,butwebothconfomed

duetopressurefromthisinformalgroup.

 Createdanallusionofunityforthetutorialteacherwithhowwewantedtocompleteit


