Document Summary

Uses integrative approaches to study how bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi cause disease. Essential to many human processes, e. g. food, antibiotics. Doubling time for e. coli = 20 minutes. Archaea have a eukaryotic gene and ribosome structure. Have a cell wall and a capsule. Domain eukarya (protists, fungi, plants and animals) A minority colonise plants or animal as their ecological niche. Found in body sites that are in contact with the outside world: skin, mucosal membranes, not normally found in organs, blood or csf. Hosts are a favourable environment for bacteria: rich source of nutrients, stable temperature, ph and physical environment. Mainly have a symbiotic relationship with the host: defence against pathogens by competitive exclusion, train immune system, metabolism, vitamin k. Able to cause damage or harm to the host (disease) Severity of damage is a measure of the virulence or pathogenicity of a bacterial species.
