Transmission – Hookworm larvae penetrates the skin vs. threadworm/pinworm obtained through ingestion of
their eggs (NOT larvae yet)
Life cycle Hookworm does not require larvae-hatching vs. threadworm/pinworm hatch their larvae in
intestine
Symptoms – Symptoms tend to be worse in hookworm vs. threadworm/pinworm
Treatment Hookworm requires mebendazole treatment for 12-hourly for 3 days vs. threadworm/pinworm
only requires a single dose of mebendazole only & repeat after 2 weeks
Distinguish between threadworm/pinworm and roundworm.
Transmission – Same as threadworm/pinworm (i.e. through ingestion of their eggs)
Life cycle – Roundworm’s larvae migrate to lungs vs. threadworm/pinworm does not migrate to lungs
Symptoms –

oDifference: Roundworm will cause pneumonitis (because they migrate to lungs) vs.
