Treatment:
-Mebendazole (Schedule 2)
oA benzimidazole drug
o100 mg as single dose, may repeat after 2 weeks
oAvailable in the form of oral liquid, tablets, chocolate squares, chewable tablets
oAvoid use in first trimester of pregnancy
-Pyrantel (Schedule 2)
o10 mg/kg up to 750 mg as a single dose
oAvailable in the form of oral liquid, tablets, chocolate squares
oSafe to use in pregnancy
-Albendazole (Schedule 4)
oA benzimidazole drug
o400 mg as single dose, may repeat after 2 weeks
oAvailable in the form of chewable tablets
Distinguish between threadworm/pinworm and hookworm.
Transmission – Hookworm larvae penetrates the skin vs. threadworm/pinworm obtained through ingestion of
their eggs (NOT larvae yet)
Life cycle – Hookworm does not require larvae-hatching vs. threadworm/pinworm hatch their larvae in
intestine
Symptoms – Symptoms tend to be worse in hookworm vs. threadworm/pinworm
Treatment – Hookworm requires mebendazole treatment for 12-hourly for 3 days vs. threadworm/pinworm
only requires a single dose of mebendazole only & repeat after 2 weeks
Distinguish between threadworm/pinworm and roundworm.
Transmission – Same as threadworm/pinworm (i.e. through ingestion of their eggs)
Life cycle – Roundworm’s larvae migrate to lungs vs. threadworm/pinworm does not migrate to lungs
Symptoms –
oSimilarity: Usually asymptomatic like threadworm
oDifference: Roundworm will cause pneumonitis (because they migrate to lungs) vs.
threadworm/pinworm does not
