Assimilation: process of taking in new information and fitting it into pre-existing mental ideas. Accommodation: changing a pre-existing mental ideas in order to fit new info. Schemas: units of knowledge, each representing some aspect of the world. Understanding that objects still exist even if they cannot be seen, heard or touched. Goal-directed behaviour: to perform and successfully complete a sequence of actions with a particular purpose in mind. E. g. a child using a pillow as a ladder to get off the bed. In this stage, infants learn primarily through their senses, thus the term sensorimotor. Primary circular reaction: the first habits during the sensorimotor stage, centred on the body. Secondary circular reaction: age range from 4months to 1 year. A child"s exploration is centred on their external world. Tertiary circular reaction: flexibly exploring the properties of objects.
