Theories from course
From academic articles
From ACT self-reflection
and positions held in
community
Teamwork
The course suggests the
positive outcomes from
strong teamwork are:
Increased productivity
Increased speed in
accomplishing tasks
Reduced costs of
expenses as teamwork
will reduce
redundancies
Improved quality due
to having a range of
minds
Reduced destructive
internal competition
Improved workplace
cohesiveness, have a
collaborative spirit
Chen and et al. discuss
the five most important
aspects of successful
team work - conflict
resolution, collaborative
problem solving,
communication, goal
setting and planning
and task coordination.
These are the key to
transportable teamwork
which they stress is the
most significant part of
teamwork where you
will be able to
participate in any kind
in any job or work
situation.
My ACT self-reflection
task sat me in the
neutral position in my
attitude toward
teamwork. There is
already a base for the
cooperation, attitudes,
and having a common
goal but it is said that
there can be more done.
Teamwork has been a
strength of mine as I
manage the canteen at
my local baseball club.
Every Saturday and on
tournament days, it is
important that every
hour we re-assess our
goals to earn as much
money, but to be as
efficient with our service
to customers as
possible.
Communication
A manager relies more on
verbal than on written
communication
Providing feedback
through the process of
functional constructive
conflict in which the main
purposes are of the
organisation are to serve
its interests which is done
through spurring
competition, changing
organisation's culture and
procedures, beinging in
outsiders for new
perspectives, and using
programmed conflict to
elicit different opinions
Singhal: "two way
communication is
desired" in which all
members of an
organisation are
required to
communicate with each
other - to have a
manager only
communicate to a
supervisor means that
there is lost
communication. There
needs to be strong
inter-personal skills that
all participate in.
ACT: The passive
listener is fairly good at
receiving messages in a
communication
exchange, but does not
expend energy to
interpret and think
about the message
content. In addition, a
passive listener may
actually be a detached
listener who is good at
faking interest.
Communication is
somewhat of a weakness
as mine. As seen in the
ACT, I am a passive
listener. I can reflect on

method
Communication barriers
include physical barriers,
semantic barriers,
personal barriers,
variations in how
information is
communicated, variations
in trustworthiness,
oversized egos, faulty
listening skills, not
understanding and
prejudice
Communication requires:
maintaining eye contact,
leaning towards the
speaker, speaking at
moderate rate, speaking
in a quiet and reassuring
tone, smile and show
animation, occasionally
nod head, be aware of
facial expressions
Horizontal
communication is the
flow between workplaces
in order for there to be
coordination
To be an effective
communicator, you have
to be a good listener,
reader, writer and
speaker
this in my own situation
at work where I
sometimes do not listen
to others as much as I
wish I could as my mind
drifts. I've started to get
better in which I will
attempt to ask questions
if I don't understand and
try repeat what people
are saying.
