Cross-Cultural Psychology
• Dominant aust culture: European / anglo
• Asians = new comers
• I Aust = displaced marginalised
• Stereotypes can be true and untrue
• US dominant in psych
• Mainstream psych applied to universal vs culture-specific psych theories
→Definitions:
• Culture:
- Involves shared values, beliefs, attitudes and behave that distinguish
members of one group from another group
- Doesn’t have to be w/ ethnicity
i.e. work culture
• Shared Rules:
- Govern behave of group of people + enable members of the group to co-exist
+ survive
- Very important → learn from society + shapes what you think/know about
the world
- Implicit = not sure why you behave in such a way
• Enculturation:
- The normal process of absorbing + internalising the rules of one’s culture
- Taking on own culture around you
- Biases the way we view the world + strengthens bonds b/t us
- Culture is a way of life
- Hard to imagine life outside our own envir
