Document Summary

Poor intake of iron most likely to occur to female, endurance and adolescent athletes, those that are limiting their energy intake. Athletes, especially female athletes may have poor intake of many minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. Athletes especially female athletes, endurance athletes are most likely to be iron de cient. (those that will be limiting their energy intake) this is normally due to low energy intake and/or restriction of animal produce. Compared to vitamins, mineral bioavailability is generally low. Minerals are inorganic substances that are either macrominerals (eg. sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium) or trace elements (eg. either macrominerals (eg. sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium) or trace elements (eg. iron, zinc, copper, chromium and selenium). Iron is a trace mineral that is responsible for the formation of haemoglobin and myoglobin. It is also an important electron transport for the function of many enzymes.
