POL 470 Final: Political Theory

This is a course in studying the ideology of politics in giving you an understanding of politics in the overall sense. The course is designed to give you a critical awareness of political activity. To ask what is power, what is authority, and understand that. In the course we read ancient political understanding, back to aristotle and cicero, through the renaissance to machiavelli and to the present day. You"ll have a critical facility by the end of this course so that when you hear modern day politicians using words such as freedom or democracy, that you"ll be better equipped to analyze these claims. Understand the nature of politics, the nature of theory and how we go about conceptualizing politics and theory. The main point i want to emphasize is that you are already aware of political theory because the world of politics itself is theory- laden. We use concepts in order to understand what is going on in the world.
