What a journey it has been let"s finish up strong! Anticoagulants and antiplatelets: there are three groups of drugs used to prevent thrombosis, an embolus or to even break up the thrombus. Haemostasis (not homeostasis) the cessation of blood flow from a wound: vasoconstriction, adhering platelets (intrinsic pathway, blood coagulation (extrinsic pathway) Embolus when a mass of a thrombus breaks away and translocates to a different area of the body, usually forming a new clot. (eg: left carotid embolus brain stroke : types of thrombosis. Venous thrombosis (red thrombus: occurs from stasis of the blood (slowed circulation, mostly fibrin trapping rbc forming the clot (some platelets). Arterial thrombosis (white thrombus: usually from atherosclerosis in patient, mostly platelets and leukocytes (less rbc and fibrin), coagulation system. A cascade of enzymatic reactions that occurs in order to elicit a controlled regulation of thrombin (enzyme) that converts fibrinogen to fibrin (insoluble).
