Structure of the Digestive System:
• Adventitia (anchor)/serosa (serous membrane)
• Muscularis externa
o Outer longitudinal
o Inner circular → thickened into sphincters
• Submucosa → loose CT with nerves and blood vessels
• Mucosa
o Muscularis mucosa
o Lamina propria → supports epithelium
o Epithelium
▪ Gut → endoderm
▪ Blood → mesoderm
• Lumen → cavity inside for passage of
food/faeces/air/blood/urine/semen
• Glands may be in mucosa, submucosa or muscularis externa
• The digestive system is a continuous tube form mouth to anus
• Different sections perform different functions → reflected in gross and
histological structures

o Reabsorption
