ANHB2216 Study Guide - Final Guide: Follicular Fluid, Skeletal Muscle, Follicular Phase
Gonads and Gametes
• Testes
o Function
▪ Gamete production → seminiferous tubules
▪ Androgen secretion → interstitial fluid → main area of
blood supply
o Seminiferous tubule
▪ Contains
• Sertoli cells → 10%
• Germ cells
▪ Immature → spermatogonia and sertoli cells
▪ Mature → proliferation of germ cells
o Sertoli cells
▪ Do not regenerate → constant number throughout adult life
▪ Function dependent on FSH and testosterone
▪ Function
• Support/nourish developing germ cells
• Protect spermatocyte/spermatids form an
autoimmune response
• Prevents toxins entering tubules → blood-testis
barrier
• Phagocytosis of residual cytoplasm during
spermiogenesis
• Release of mature spermatids into lumen of tubule
• Secretory → androgen binding protein, AMH, inhibin
• Spermatogenesis

o Spermiogenesis
▪ Golgi apparatus gives rise to glycoprotein rich granules
▪ Granules form acrosomal cap → lies over nucleus
▪ Acrosomal cap critical to fertilization
▪ Centrioles within nucleus → one differentiates and forms
tail → flagellum
▪ Remaining centrioles line up along midpiece → where
mitochondria are found
▪ Large amounts of cytoplasm removed
▪ Matures in epididymis
o Cycle of seminiferous epithelium
▪ Stem cells enter into spermatogenesis approximately every
16 days
▪ Spermatogenesis takes ~75 days to complete
▪ Spermatogenic wave → adjacent tubules are at different
stages of the seminiferous cycle
