HIV
-HIV can attach via gp120
-CD4+ count low in people with HIV!
-CXCR4 (late phase) !
-CCR5 (associated with early phase of HIV) = 2 chemokine to remember !
Influenza
-Influenza can attach to sialic acid on epithelial cells!
-Influenza A = Avian = birds!
-2 important molecules on viruses of H5N1 !
-(H = haemagglutinin, N = neruaminidase)
-Both to do with entry/exit of viruses!
-Antigenic shift
-(more severe, pandemics, jump species to species eg. Swine flu in pigs to humans)!
Viral structure:
1) NA = DNA/RNA!
2) Protein coat = capsid !
3) Lipid membrane (some) = envelope !
-> whole cell derived, when virus leaving the cell (budding o), takes part of host
membrane!
Virus:
= obligate intracellular parasite !
-(only can replicate using host cell machinery)!
-Can survive outside host cell!
-Cannot replicate outside host cell!
Morphology of viruses:
-Helical (eg. ebola)!
-Complex virus (Bacteriophage)!
-Icosahedral (most ecient to package up space)!
Viral replication cycle:
-classified based on how they replicate!
-5 steps:!
1) Attachment (eg. HIV + gp120)!
2) Entry !
3) Synthesis of viral protein (only after inside HC)!
4) Assembly!

Document Summary

Cd4+ count low in people with hiv. Ccr5 (associated with early phase of hiv) = 2 chemokine to remember. In uenza can attach to sialic acid on epithelial cells. 2 important molecules on viruses of h5n1. Both to do with entry/exit of viruses. (more severe, pandemics, jump species to species eg. swine u in pigs to humans) Viral structure: na = dna/rna, protein coat = capsid, lipid membrane (some) = envelope. > whole cell derived, when virus leaving the cell (budding o ), takes part of host membrane. (only can replicate using host cell machinery) Icosahedral (most e cient to package up space) 5 steps: attachment (eg. hiv + gp120, entry, synthesis of viral protein (only after inside hc, assembly, release. = virus infected cell have characteristic indicative of cell being infected by virus when under microscope. = (negri bodies present in rabies infection) = multinucleated cell that can result from multiple cell fusions of uninuclear cells.
