Biomechanics of Bone:
-2 Conflicts:
-1. need for strength BUT
-need lightness to move bones about
3 important characteristics in bones to meet these two conflicts:
1) tubular construction
-as strong as solid rock thus don't need materials in center to give extra stability
2) light cancellous spongy bones at the ends
3) struts and ties of cancellous bones arranged in lines of force
Increase in stress = ?
- increase in strain!
Graph (Load-Deformation):
-elastic region and yield point:
-(in elastic region) = if load is removed, the deformation decreases
-if tissue is above yield point (out of elastic region), it will be in plastic region
-when load comes off, strain will go back down
-BUT tissue won’t be the same
-BECAUSE some tissue would be broken
Beyond yield point:
-tissue will break
-will never go back to the same spot
-Even when load removed
-When too much load, tissue will snap and fail
