The first version of FreeBSD was released in 1993, and its development has been
completely maintained by FreeBSD project. The FreeBSD project has ~500 committers
whom can access master source code repositories and push to them. Most are volunteers
but some paid by private companies. A 9-member core team is elected every 2 years and
are responsible for overall project direction, approving new committers.
