Used to establish existence of cause and effect relationship between 2 variables. Demonstrate one variable directly causes change in the other. Researchers are confronted with many other interrelated variables. Hard to control what exactly influences what. Need to isolate and separate if you want to get to bottom of it. A third variable (unidentified) could be controlling the two variables and producing observed relation. Researchers must actively manipulate independent variable rather than simply waiting for variable to change on its own. If it changes on its own, its possible other variables are changing. Determining which variable is the cause and which is the effect. Simply observing that a relationship exists does not identify its direction. To determine direction, manipulate one variable and see how the second variable is affected. Switching manipulating variable: e. g. temp. increase ice cream sales, ice cream sales do(cid:374)"t increase temp. Need to find and control the confounding variables.
