Mandisa questions why amy was in the area to begin with and goes on to put the blame on her. She does not blame her son; she instead later blames the apartheid system for causing this violence. Some blame needs to be put on mxolisi because he is the one that committed the crime, however as discussed in seminar, a lot of blame needs to be put on the system. One white woman died and caused an uproar, and thousands of black individuals die and people look passed it. Magona talks about the huge emphasis there is on the youth. There is a lack of proper schooling and education and so they have no choice but to turn to violence. Many of the characters react in a certain way because they cannot recognize that they are living in oppression because that is how it had always been.
