The ear has 1000 moving parts, is encased in the temporal bone, its just an etching out, not its own entity. For balance, information is gathered form the visual, proprioceptive/somatosensory and vestibular body systems. This information is respectively controlled by the cerebellum (manages vestibular system, visual system and proprioseptive system- takes information from muscles and tendons as it relates to things around you) In order for your balance to work, all three of the systems above must work. Responsible for sense of position, interpreting the direction and gravity in reference to the position of your head, angular changes in the body. Arranged at 90 degree angles to one another. Each on starts at the utricle and returns to the utricle and provide information regarding equilibrium. There are hair cells contained within this system that have peripheral projections that reach toward the vestibular portion of the 8th cranial nerve.
