Unions emerge from and are a product of the fundamental difference of interest between workers and employers. Great majority of working people gain their livelihood through paid work i. e. selling their capacity to labour/work (labour power) to employers in return for a wage or salary. Workers agree to work under the direction of an employer in return for a wage.
