Does not dictate what is right or wrong. Looks at purpose of the language (interview, chat between friends, tweet you want to go viral) Morpheme is the smallest unit of a word. Can be a single word or independant meaningful unit. Ex reindustrialize - re-, industry, -ial, -ize are all morphemes. Free morphemes are units that can stand alone, like industry in above example. Bound morphemes are those units which cannot stand alone ex -ful, -able, -ed, -s aka prefixes and suffixes. Derivational bound morphemes either change class/category a word belongs to or drastically changes semantic meaning. Inflectional bound morphemes do not change class or meaning.
