Cooing is strings of vowels strung together separated by intakes of break. Loud and soft, high and low, bilabial trills, sustained vowels, marginal babbling. Initially oral cavity is small and completely filled with tongue. Gain more muscle strength and ability to make more sounds. Cooing emerges when motor cortex goes through maturation significantly. Exposed to others speech and own sounds. Receive social responses to their own vocalizations. Infants vocalize more the more responsive mom is to it. Taped french, arabic and chinese babies babbling at 6, 8, 10 months. Presented babbling pairs of french/arabic or french/chinese to judges. French judges were accurate at 70% level of 8 month olds. Hard time at 6 months shows babies babble same at 6 months. Hard time at 10 months because more consonant sounds, the prosody of babbling was distorted and judges had harder time discriminating. Analyze babbling for features of ambient language.
