Hegemonic Masculinity
Normative ideal of dominant masculinity
o Primarily reflective of able-bodied, white, heterosexual largely middle/upper-class males
o Most males don’t meet this ideal norm
o Not necessarily the most prominent form o masculinity, but the one that is most socially
endorsed
o Characteristics that are encouraged: devaluation of the feminine, violence and aggression,
emotional restraint, courage, toughness, risk-taking, competitiveness, and achievement
and success
Hegemonic implies large measure of consent
Hegemony gained through cultural means, we are persuaded to accept idea of masculinity
Gay masculinity is the most conspicuous form of masculinity
Accepting these masculine characteristics is key for hegemonic masculinity
Tough Guise 2
Katz analyzes portrayals of men in advertising, television, Hollywood, films, entertainment
industries, sports, and politics to illuminate what they convey about normative masculinity
Violence in America real or staged violent masculinity
Supportive environment allows men to talk about violent masculinity
On average violence is a men’s issue
Media coverage of mass shootings, reporters go to find gender neutral ways to discuss the
news
o Shooters, psychopath, murderer nothing to describe that it’s a male
o Violence in children even though most is performed by boys not girls
Violence in America blamed on games, family issues, mental illness yet men and women both
deal with these and men are the ones who commit most of the violent acts
People focus on how to help victims instead of how to stop the violence

Violence against women – as if no one is committing the violence, men are responsibly
for 98% of this violence but no one blames the men
When women are violent they are called out teenage girls violent, their gender becomes
the story the same way race becomes the story if men of colour commit violent acts
Dominant ideologies over power subordinate groups
o Race anyone of colour
o Sexual orientation gay, lesbian, trans
o Gender women
o People don’t think about white, heterosexual and men when thinking about the
above terms
Men are said to be violent due to history, and it’s inevitable and boys will be boys
There are biological factors that come into play
Power of an Illusion
Notion of race division among people that are clear cut, distinct categories
Idea of race assumes that simple external differences are linked to complex internal
differences like:
o Athletic ability
o Musical talent
o Intelligence
Links that race is biologically real, however there are no genetic markers that define race
One characteristic is not present in EVERY person of ONE race
People assume that they are most similar to people who look like them/similar background
Race is not based on biology, it’s based on an idea that is described to biology
Racial differences are often part of careful calculation of competitive edge
o People assume black people are faster than white people
Genetic variation between human population is very small, we are the most genetically
similar among all species
Fruit flies are genetically different from each other as a human is from a chimpanzee
Biology becomes an excuse for social differences
tendency of negro race has been downward and lead to a greater mortality (offman
Compared rates of death/disease between African Americans and white
o He ignored effects of poverty and social effects on health
o Said their extinction was inevitable
Safeguard white racial purity by passing marriage laws against interracial
Mongrels mixed race/unclassifiable, were able to pass for white but were a combination
of the worst racial traits
Negro athlete excelled because he was closer to the primitive
1930s rise of negro athletes lead people to question how and why they were so excellent
There is not one single physical feature, including skin colour, which would identify them
as negro
Being black has been defined as being visibly black, not to do with your background
