Common elements of culture: language, values, symbols, norms (folkways & mores) Distinguished element from animals is the ability to communicate through language, most important ability. Almost everything is learned through language: verbal or nonverbal, written or unwritten. Language and culture give rise to each other and are in constant interaction. Agents of socialization allow us to become functioning members of society (family, education, peers) Feral children: anna locked in storage room by mother for most of her life: illustrates nurture is more important than nature, failed to develop personality. Humans are a product of both our genetic makeup and social interaction (nature vs. nurture) Cooley & horton both viewed social interaction and process and significant in the development of self.
