SOCI3P02 Qualitative studies
Drop in hours: Monday 3-4pm and Tuesday 1:30-3pm
Qualitative has a lot to do with how you view things and yourself, compared
to quantitative
Topic for your research this semester:

Why Qualitative methods?
My choice of method linked to research question, philosophy and goals
o Ex: textbooks and cookbooks, they give the impression that there is a
menu of research choices these choices are relation the truth and
reality
Researchers seek to gain in-depth understating of our settings and
participants
Data are rich and not reducible to numerical dimension
o Some qualitative researchers do use numbers, but not often
Qualitative research involves perception, interpretation, and description of
qualities
Relationally of qualitative methods provides personal and sociological
insight
o How do we relate to our research topic?
o How does this relate to our life?
o This will gain personal and sociological insight
Qualitative researchers investigate:
o Rules
o Feelings
o Practices
o Relationships
o Meanings etc.
How what and why questions are usually asked
o Hoe do people interpret and give meaning to their life circumstances?
o How do people participate in the social construction of realty?
Reality isn’t a given, we are all in the production of reality
o What Is the relationship of individuals to society (language, culture)?
o How do global social relations affect local situations (and vise versa)?
o How does power work in peoples lives?
o How does social change happen?

3 types of research purposes
o Exploratory
o Descriptive
o Explanatory
Exploratory Research
o Investigate and under-researched area
o Generate preliminary data to shape future research
o Contributes to under-researched areas
o This tends to be very broad this would get a larger overview
compared to other method
o Very open-ended questions
Descriptive Research
o Describe aspect of social reality
o Provide thick description of insider perspective – its complex
Explanatory Research
o Explain social phenomena
Relationships between different components of topic
o The first questions that you bring from the situation
o Addresses the why of social life
Example Questions:
o What happens to people after they have lost a home?
o Write qualitative research questions to this study question with the
three research purposed: exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory
Exploratory question relating the to topic: Looking at the
experience with single moms
OR Does class have an effect on the situation?
Descriptive: Looking at mental health, or the affect of children
or the overall health of a well being
How does social assistant help you in this situation? How do
they use the supports? (look at the support)
Exploratory research: Who out there has lost a home?
o What hurtles have the person gone through?
