Materialism is the philosophical view that the material world constitutes the essence of what it means to be human. Materialists argue that human nature is determined by the casual force of physical matter. The difference between culture and cultures is that the singular definition refers to distinguishing human characteristics of being able to create patterns that promote the survival of the species. The plural definition refers to a learned way of life belonging to a specific group of humans. Anthropologist argue against the use of the plural definition of culture stating that the plural definition highlights differences rather than the shared humanness of groups of people. The advantage of holistic approach in anthropology is that it removes any objectivity from the study.
