Document Summary

Artificial selection = first applied genetic technique control mating of parents to produce desired offspring. Before mendel 3 questions were had : what is inherited, how is it inherited, role of chance. Inherited traits in offspring were only from 1 parent: traits from parents were mixed to give offspring"s traits blended in heritance . Traits could remain constant cross fertilization or self fertilization. Antagonistic pairs of traits examined were either-or traits e. g. peas were either yellow or green. Antagonistic = either-or traits; seed colour, stem length, flower position, pod colour, flower colour, seed shape, pod shape. Crossed plants that differed only in 1 trait (e. g. seed colour) cross yellow and green. Both parental traits reappeared in f2 3:1 ratio. F1 was all yellow indication yellow was dominant over green dominant relationship. 2 alleles per gene (aa/aa/aa) gets one from maternal and one from paternal. Units of inheritance = genes (alternative forms of these genes = alleles)
