1882-1941: the greatest english born novelist of the 20th century. Born into intellectual elite of englands upper-middle class. She wrote 9 novels, thousands of letters, 400 essays. She was sexually abused by one of her older half brothers beginning at the age of 6. Her father was depressed, her sister was institutionalized at a young age. She suffered from depression herself and mad several suicide attempts. Her death in 1941 was a suicide by drowning. She lived in talland house in cornwall which filled her with the sounds of waves. She sits at the center of the bloomsburry group (informal group of writers) and married a member of the group: leonard woolf and they purchased a printing press and formed the hogarth press. Mrs. dalloway (1925), the lighthouse (1927) and the waves in 1931. 1929: a room of ones own: powerful texts about the position of women.
