Issues: division between western and eastern europe. the early 1990"s. Ir proved to be very important in the first half of the 19th century. From 1945 to the early 1990"s they were overlain by broader division between east and west. Both sides, struggle within each country and by leadership to retain independence from the two superpowers. Many more similarities between eastern and western europe during the cold war then we can imagine. We think of west as more democratic and east as more authoritarian.
