Grammar - rules and constraints that govern language. Is the mental system that allows people to form and interpret the words and sentences of their language. Everybody who knows language has a mental grammar (unconscious knowledge of language, don"t know how we learned it) Kids learn it quickly without enough input: poverty of the stimulus . Hypothesis: some properties of language are universal and innate. Mental grammar is not the same as universal grammar. Kids can learn language in ways adults cant.
