Document Summary

Coercion - do it because it is socially accepted (wear heels to a job interview) Can"t describe it in a way that everyone will agree on. Law can"t be constant; changes due to society. Law depends a lot of us and our choice to obey. Idea that historically people were certain that they could define law; however people tend to take their own experiences of law and allow that to be their definition. When people tried to define law, there was dispute. Eg. core elements of a table/apple stated that law was not like that, and has no core elements. Theorists don"t always agree whether their definition is right or not. There are conditions to being an essentially contested concept. *contain value judgement to it (a piece of art: art, or not?) *made up of multiple concepts (art: beauty, truth, expression) *internal concepts have to be complex as well (is this art? do i like it?)
