Genres of secular music art music during the classical period. Traces back to the sinfonia (overture to late baroque italian operas three sections: fast-slow- fast. Sinfonias began to be performed apart from operas. Northern european composers added a fourth movement. Rise in genre"s popularity correlates to growth of public concerts. Some orchestras never went over 30 musicians public concerts required 50+ Larger halls and larger audience necessitated a larger, more colourful orchestra. Was composed in a six-week period during the summer of 1788. Style conveys an introspective mood of tragedy and despair (influenced by the sturm und drang movement of the 1760s-early 70"s) A falling half step used throughout the history of music to suggest pain and suffering.
