We became interested in music around the world in the 18th century. Field work, might be racially offensive, people might not want to share their culture, cultural imperialism. Colonialism = approaching it from western standpoint could impose western analytical methods. Orientalism = imitation of eastern music (asian music) in a patronizing way, a form of colonialism. In 19th century there were issues about ears and listening about how we receive tone: 21st century had cognitive approaches, because mris were available and you could see what was going on in the brain. Definition: study of music and the mind. Issues: no people yet to experiment with real, more complex music, different skill set for music psychology than in other areas of music study, need more science and psychology background.
