Once the method is chosen, detailed plans must be made: collect data: (data collecion: procedures for making empirical observaions and measurements, analyze the data and draw conclusions: covert the observaions made into numbers. Researchers use staisics: report the findings: usually published in an academic journal. Advantages to the scieniic approach: clarity and precision. Independent variables: a condiion or event that an experimenter varies in order to see its impact on another variable. Dependent variable: variable that is thought to be afected by manipulaion of the independent variable. Experimental groups: consist of the subjects who receive some special treatment in regard to the independent variable. Control groups: consist of similar subjects who do not receive the special treatment given to the experiment group. Extraneous variables: any variables other than the independent variable that seem likely to inluence the dependent variable in a speciic study.
