In the past, experimental psychology was very focused on the individual self, not the group. In the western mentality there is the idea that we control our own lives, but we are influenced by others. Social psychology started in germany but it never made its way across the atlantic. William wuntd had volker psychology- psychology of the people. You should study cultural artifacts (fads, logos, fashion, cultural norms) Participants would conform to what the confederates would say, even though it was obviously the wrong answer. Being around a group changes your perception. We unconsciously process words quickly, our mind decides if they are neutral words or taboo words. People (cid:449)ere respo(cid:374)di(cid:374)g slo(cid:449)er to a (cid:449)ord like (cid:862)pe(cid:374)is(cid:863) (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause the(cid:455) (cid:449)ere e(cid:373)(cid:271)arrassed, not because it was a taboo word. We are monsters because of the influence of authority. They had people write a speech about kindness, and then walk through an alleyway to give the speech.
