Crime always involves violating a law but deviance does not. Crime is a violation of a formal norm in the criminal code. Deviance is a violation of an informal norm derived from popular beliefs. Number of and variety of deviance greatly exceeds the number of crimes. Not all deviant acts are crimes but all crimes are deviant acts. Behaviour is always being tested by deviant acts. Legal requirement that all laws that are challenged have to be vetted to ensure they pass the constitutional test. Can have clashes between morals and man-made laws (prostitution, marijuana, gay rights) Pathological disease of the mind, disease of society (serial killers) It provides a security belt to let out steam: deviance clarifies rules, deviance tests rules. May break them to test their validity: another means of global attainment. Being a drug dealer is another way to fill societies goals of making money.
