Document Summary

According to the infancy period from birth till 18 months, the attachment theory supports that social emotional development is heavily dependent on the infant"s ability to form a secure relationship with their caregiver (gartstein & iverson, 2014). The attachment theory focuses on the relationship between the infant and the primary caregiver. The underlying determinant of developing attachment is establishing security and safety by maintaining close proximity (snyder, shapiro & treleaven, 2012). Infants build mental representations that help them accumulate their experiences (snyder et al. , 2012). Parents are a powerful influence on infant development as they shape the infant"s early experiences to help create an internal working model (snyder et al. , 2012). This internal working model plays a role in establishing a sense of independence and resilience that facilitates future emotional relationships (snyder et al. , 2012). Attachment can be categorized into two types which include secure and insecure attachment (snyder et al. , 2012).
