Speices composition, species richness, relative abundance and dominance, indices of diversity and evenness. Composition = identity, who is there in terms of species. The prairies of north america once covered a large portion of the continent. Today, less than 1% of the prairie remains, mostly in small isolated patches. Alpha diveristy = diversity in a patch. Gamma diversity = diversity in the regional scale ( in terms of protecting patches of land) Ecological community = the set of plant and animal species that occupy an area: any set of organisms that co-occur in a palce and itneract in some way to make up a community. Co-existance mechanisms = biodiversity maintained through time. Species richness (s) = the count of the number of species occuring within the community: simplest measure of diversity, possibly most important communtiy traits, estimating richness within a single community is less daunting.
