The darwinian revolution challenged traditional views of a young earth inhabited by unchanging species. Descent with modification by natural selection explains the adaptations of organisms and the unity and diversity of life. Evolution is supported by an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence. The word evolution isn"t used in darwin"s book. Darwin didn"t invent the theory of evolution (a lot of scientists before him talked about this) However, he provided a mechanism (natural selection) for the evolution. Evolution as a pattern: many fields of science (bio, geology, physics) facts we"ve seen the actual changes. Evolution as a process: actual mechanism that produce the observed patterns, process that we are continuing to test. Aristotle (& linnaeus) viewed species as fixed (unchanging), he discovers affinities among organisms. Life form can be arranged on a scale of increasing complexity (scale of nature) From molecules to organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ system, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystem, biosphere.
