Presenters: emaly ciubotaru, tarek taifour, noha skaik and stephanie tran. Switch towards mesenchymal state (emt) and metastatic translocation. Emt is when stationary epithelial cells lose their epithelial characteristics and acquire a mesenchymal morphology and an ability to migrate and invade. Emt promotes carcinoma cells to dissociate from each other at the primary tumour and to metastasize to distance organs. The involvement in emt in tumour metastasis has been greatly debated. A reversible model is proposed since at the beginning they have the epithelial characteristics then they convert to the mesenchymal morphology but at the secondary sites they need to go back to the epithelial characteristics. Emt and tumour cells does not result in tumors with the mesenchymal phenotype. Metastasis is a multi-step process in which cancer cells from the site of primary tumors, they go and establish secondary tumours in distant organs. The main epitheial markers discussed in paper: e.
