Akragas wins small war with himera, himera has support from carthage, 480 bc. In celebration, akragas builds a temple, extremely large, never finished. Diodorus: after battle of himera, captives from carthage were made to work on temple. There are substantial local traditions, so greek art with a local twist. Style: pseudo-peripetal columns (7x14 )half columns joined by screen walls. Interior: pilasters/piers on interior and forming cella walls. Supporting elements in middle thickened to support the roof. Outside elements: doric columns with bases, peristyle columns ca. 20m high: screen walls only part of this height. Forming windows, 7. 5 x 3. 5 m: on top of each screen wall stands an atlas/telamon statues. Male versions of carytids, shown holding up the roof. Telamon/atlas: male figure used for structural supports, 7. 5 m high, to carry the weight of the entablature.
