Document Summary

Three main fundamental psychological needs are competence, autonomy and relatedness. Competence is the need to feel successful and efficient in one"s own environment. It involves the motives for mastery and self-efficacy. Psychological needs are innate sources of motivation that generate the desire to interact with our environment so as to develop psychologically, socially and personally. Positive emotions allow us to approach good things. The environment provides opportunity, structure, provides external sources of motivation, helps establish relationships and can either support or frustrate our needs. In self- determination theory, humans must interact with their environments in order to develop their needs. When the person positively interacts with their environment, they are successful at developing their needs. When the interaction is unsuccessful, the person feels unfulfilled which leads to less optimal development: name and describe the three qualities associated with perceived autonomy.
