Opportunity to select two or more behaviours with the same of different reinforcement contingencies. A. k. a concurrent schedules (compared to simple schedules) What influences choice: reinforcer quality, quantity, behaviour type of response, schedule of reinforcement (i. e. , effort, available alternatives, delay in reinforcement. Goal: determine how individuals distribute behaviour between two or more alternatives. 2 schedules of reinforcement are in effect at the same time and the subject is free to switch from one response key to the other. Allows for continuous meaurement of choice, because organism is free to switch from one option to the other at any time. Max total rate of reinforcement was 40 pellets/hr. Given pair of vi schedules remained in effect for 1 month. Recorded response rate on each key, in several pigeons. Relative response rate on two alternatives will match relative reinforcement rates that occur on the two alternatives.
