SOCI 375 Study Guide - Quiz Guide: Rape Culture
Document Summary
Many assault victims cited fear as a response to not reporting. Victims feel that there are more consequences that come with reporting than with not reporting, such as judgement, demotion, and stigma. Many victims felt as though they would not be protected. Many of these responses stem from rape culture that permeates society as a whole. Identify specific examples that contribute to creating rape culture, other than those discussed in the chapter. Rape culture is when people are told to prevent being raped, rather than being told not to rape. It frames rape as a crime that occurs in isolation, by men who suddenly go crazy and attack helpless, nonsexual, pure women; or by seductive women who lead men to do wrong, through her actions/dress/intoxication level etc. Another example is the statement boys will be boys rather than holding boys accountable for their actions, they are excused with the belief that boys are supposed to be aggressive and disrespectful.
