Document Summary

6. 1- biologists use microscopes and tools of biochemistry to study cells. In a light microscope visible light is passed through the specimen and then through the glass lenses. The lenses refract (bend) light in such a way that the image of the specimen is magnified as it is projected into the eye or camera. 3 important parameters in microscopy are: magnification- ratio of an objects image to its real size, resolution-measure of clarity of an image, contrast-difference in brightness between the light and dark areas of the image. Resolution barrier prevented cell biologists from using standard light microscopy to study organelles. Electron microscope focuses on a beam of electrons through the specimen or onto its surface. Scanning electron microscope- useful for a detailed study of the topography (detailed mapping or charting of the features of a relatively small area) of a specimen. The transmission electron microscope- is used to study the internal structure of cells.
