Science of heredity: understanding how biological properties are transmitted from parents to offspring, midterm is entirely based on problem solving. Sometimes used to reference the complete set of one of more genes: refers only to the information content of nucleic acid, ex. Gene sequence that encodes glycosltransferase: phenotype: a measurable trait of an organism that is controlled by one or more genes but can be influenced by environmental effects, not inherited, ex. A blood type: all living organisms use the same genetic system, all hereditary information is encoded in nucleic acids, nucleic acids are a polymer made of nucleotide monomers, dna is very nearly the universal genetic material. Information is encoded in the molecular structure of genes on chromosomes: gene > nucleosome (with histones and chromatosome) > looped domains > chromosome, genes come in alternate states, called alleles, could have two sets of homologous chromosomes.
