What is psychology?
Every time you try to explain someone else, that is psychology.
Why study psychology?
- Scientific perspective helps you develop a curiosity for how behavior works
- Makes your more aware of how you and other work
This can help you be a better doctor or even person because it influences how you perceive
your and other people’s thoughts. Can make you understand how a patient feels
Differences between clinical psychology and psychiatry ***** review this section of the

Psychologist treat your problems of thought and behavior
Psychiatrist conduct lab research on emotion, cognition, learning…and make you more
empathetic.
Sub disciplines of psychology
Cognitive psychology
Study of how we perceive information, how we learn and remember, how we acquire and learn
language, and how we solve problems.
Developmental psychology
Studies how taught and behavior change and show stability in a lifetime. This study believes that
organism change and grow and psychological functions do as well. How do or emotional skills
change as we age ?
Behavioural neuroscience
- Studies the link among the mind, brain and behavior.
- Various disciplines : brain function in learning, emotion, social behavior…
- More popular one is biological psychology that studies all the connections from the
bodily system to behavior and thought (chemical reactions)
Personality psychology
- What makes people unique
- Consistencies of people’s behavior over time and situations
- “do we change or stay the same?’
Social psychology
- The real and imagined presence of others effect on thought, feeling and behavior
- Questions involve racism, why people act aggressively in situation when their usually
calm
Clinical psychology
- Treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders and ways to promote mental
health
