Document Summary

Females have two reproductive cycles: the ovarian cycle and the uterine cycle. The ovarian cycle involves the maturation of the oocytes (female gametes) in the ovaries (female gonads) in a 28-day cycle. This includes the stages of growth of the oocyte, the release of one mature oocyte and the formation of the corpus luteum. The uterine (or menstrual) cycle on the other hand, is the development of the walls of the uterus specifically the stratum functionalis of the endometrium for the arrival of a (possible) fertilized egg. This includes the shedding of this functional layer (if no fertilized egg is present), the rebuilding of the endometrium layer and the thickening of the stratum functionalis. While the main reproductive structures involved in the ovarian cycle are the ovaries, the uterine cycle acts mainly upon the uterus. The ovarian cycle has 3 phases/main events: i) the follicular phase; ii) ovulation; and iii) the luteal phase.
