Document Summary

Referred as vitamins & minerals, micronutrients are required in small amounts that are essential to our health, development & growth. Salivary amylase & salivary lipase (both enzymes) are produced in the salivary glands. While chewing, the food mixes w/ these enzymes (now called a bolus) The bolus passes the pharynx, travels to the esophagus and to the stomach. tissue called the epiglottis which prevents food from entering the lungs. Wave- like contraction of the smooth muscles that aids the bolus in moving from the esophagus to the stomach to the digestive tract towards the releases at the anus. This is regulated by the autonomic nervous system. Before the bolus enters the stomach, it passes through a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter, which guards the entryway to the stomach. Once the bolus enters the stomach, it mixes with gastric juices made of hcl, pepsin, mucus, h2o & gastric lipase.
