This unit begins with an impressionistic account of the first greeks, emphasizing their warlike nature, written records of their society, and religious priorities. It then goes on to discuss oral epic poetry, the medium through which later greeks gained access to their glorious past. Next, the unit deals with the nature of the greek gods as revealed by epic poetry. At this point, the study of the hymn is interrupted by a consideration of some features of greek religion generally, and then we return to the hymn and what it may tell us about demeter"s gift to her initiates. The unit ends with a reading of the hymn which sets it in the context of earlier epic poetry. Awareness of the character of mycenaean greeks, their relationship to minoans.
